From 2025 onwards, the female military enlistment will be a reality in Brazil, offering new opportunities for women who wish to contribute to the Armed Forces.
This historic change opens doors for more active and equal participation of women in military service, something unprecedented in the country.
In this guide, I will explain how enlistment works, who can participate, and the details you need to know to sign up.
Who can participate in female military enlistment?
From 2025, women who turn 18 will be able to enlist in the Armed Forces voluntarily.
Enlistment will be open to all who meet the basic criteria: being of legal age in the year of registration and residing in a city with Military Organizations participating in the program.
This is an important step towards ensuring that women have the opportunity to contribute equally to the Armed Forces.
It is important to highlight that enlistment will be volunteer, that is, unlike men, women will not be forced to enlist, but will have the option to do so, if they wish.
Initially, 1.500 places will be offered, with plans to expand this number in the coming years.
How does female military enlistment work?
The process of female enlistment will follow the same calendar and requirements as the men's competition, taking place between the months of January and June.
Interested parties can register at Ministry of Defense website or in person at a Military Service Board. Enlistment offers an initial 12-month service contract, with the possibility of extension for up to 8 years.
After the selection process, candidates will undergo specific training and will be able to work in various areas of the Armed Forces, such as health, logistics and education, in addition to combat roles that, until recently, were restricted to men.
Female participation in military forces is growing, and this new phase marks a significant advance for women in the Armed Forces.
Areas of activity for women in the Armed Forces
Women already occupy several roles in the Armed Forces, mainly in areas such as health, education and logistics.
With female military enlistment, they will also have the opportunity to participate in operational sectors, being able to act directly in combat roles.
In addition, competitions for officer positions and specializations in fields such as Intendancy e Communications are already accessible to women.
Other countries, such as Canada and Norway, have allowed women to serve on the front lines since the 1980s, and the introduction of this right in Brazil puts the country in line with other nations that have sought to integrate women more into combat areas.
What to Expect After Enlistment
Once incorporated into the Armed Forces, enlisted women will be committed to fulfilling military obligations as provided for in the legislation, just like men.
This includes participating in physical and technical training, in addition to following the disciplinary and hierarchical regime characteristic of the Forces.
It is important to mention that, although enlistment is voluntary, after registration and acceptance into the program, military service becomes mandatory, and failure to comply may result in penalties, as with any military service.
